Tom Sneek Collection Date: 1957
Description:
The tank at Vesteys meatworks with decaying building around the place. In the very distance is Darwin City.
Don:
Between 1914 and 1917, Vestey Brothers built the North Australia Meat Company, also known as Vestey's Meatworks, in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Despite its official name, the slaughterhouse was never profitable and was operational for only three years before the company abandoned the venture in the aftermath of the Darwin rebellion. In 1957, most of the facility was demolished, but two large water tanks still stand today on what is now the Darwin High School site in The Gardens suburb. As a result of the meatworks, the beach north of Bullocky Point is now known as Vestey's Beach.

This is more like a story book, as it came about as follows:
Don:
I just received these three photos from our Member Betty Harris.
She says "Not good quality and I wouldn’t want to offend anyone now they have both gone but it was such a funny opportunity one Sunday afternoon at the green room must have been mid or late 1980,s I guess. My kids don’t know these people, it’s either send them to you or destroy them".
Unfortunately they aren't good quality images, or of any known significance to restore at this stage I feel.
The really sad part is that we are going through our own photos and getting rid of anything that we know nothing about, or have no real way of knowing anything further.
I feel what caught my attention was Betty's mention of destroying them. I felt I can at least run them past our members for comment.
Comments:
Ronda Comber:
Loved Cowboy! And I did attend a couple of parties at Peter Morgan's house back in the 80s. Fabulous!!
Marianne McAdie:
Bloke on the right is Cowboy Bill iconic character around Darwin. He helped support many bars around town both financially and physically. Well known winner of the Tall Tales contest. He was happy to talk to anyone. I only remember him like that I doubt he had any family. The other is Peter Morgan well known and fondly remembered member of the Darwin community. He was gay hence nickname Queen Mother. He once tried to chat up my husband, but I still liked him. He was well known as bartender and partner of Ben Teminelo (?). He had the VIC, Squires and several other pubs around town. Photos are worth restoring. Any long term Darwinite will recognise them.
Anne Tique:
Yes restore, they are well known old territorians!
Julie Mende
Queen Mum & Cowboy both real old style characters!
Anne Tique:
I don't know if anyone can remember Peter Morgan used to carry around a small doll or toy cat that he called Alawishes. (or spelling similar)
I had forgotten that. I remember he wore a white full suit (coat and jacket white shirt and tie) to the Darwin Show in the early 80’s. It had no paved roads only red dust. Somehow he walked away without any dust on that white suit. I went to his funeral it was packed.
Anne Tique
Marianne McAdie Yes he was a character!
Marianne McAdie:
A hypnotist named Spano came to Darwin for couple of years and did shows at the Darwin Hotel. We went to the Adults only show. Peter Morgan was bartending. Just before the interval Spano told the people he had hypnotised that their arseholes had been stolen. Then he brought them out of the trance but they were still under instruction. Of the three men two went straight to Peter and accused him of the theft. Peter took it in good heart and played along.
Cheryl And-Don McKenzie
After the member's positive responses to these images, I decided to go ahead and try one, and it turned out fairly good. As it is, there are only two photos as one is repeated, so I'll go ahead with the story to date, and the image I have converted. It will be presented in the near future. Thanks Betty Harris. Your work wasn't in vain. ??

NT Contingent off to the Great War. All marched down to the wharf under the Japanese "Rising Sun" flag, due to the Japanese being our Allies in WW1 and 8 of their biggest ships guarded our coastline for the duration of the war and not without cause, a German Warship disguised as a Merchant ship made the worlds longest voyage of WW1 and came up under Australia, sunk 8 ships off the east coast, re-supplied at a PNG German Port and returned to Germany 16 months later with 400 P.O.Ws and 800 tonnes of Coal as with all the bounties of the ships they scuttled. That Ship was called the SMS Wolf, of which i am currently making a model of.
Also on board this ship would have been two men I am aware of, Jimmy Cain, a good friend of my great Grandfather and Harry Edwards, Son-in-Law to my Great Grandparents.

Hardy Collection Date: 1958
Description: (wrong and photo mirror reversed)
MS in blue Looking towards Darwin Town. View appears to be along Smith Street with the Montoro Watertower in the middle ground.
Notes:
The photographer appears in several slides as Me and may have been named Wesley (see PH1022/0064). Other names in this collection include Charles/Charlie Young and Ken Harvey. The group appears to have lived and worked in Darwin for a period of time, having residences in Knuckey and Westralia Streets. They may have been involved in the engineering sector or there may be a connection with the Dept of Housing. (BH 7/04/2017)
Don:
Thanks to Rodney Thompson and David Darwin, it has been determined that the original image was mirror reversed. It looks like Smith St West on the left with the Packard Place water tank in the centre and the West Lane water tank in the distance. It also appears to have been taken from The Lambell Terrace nurse's quarters.

Description:
Frog Hollow, located in Darwin, has an interesting historical background. In 1952, the area known as Frog Hollow became the site for the construction of Darwin Primary School. The school buildings were situated on what is now known as Lot 5672, while the school playground encompassed the western part of Lot 5672 and Lot 5665. Prior to the establishment of the school, Frog Hollow served as a natural drainage line, transforming into a wet season creek during certain times of the year.
Lot 5665 of Frog Hollow holds particular significance as it was officially designated as a Heritage Place under the Heritage Conservation Act in March 1996. The Heritage Register describes Frog Hollow as an open parkland that was initially used as worker camps during the early years of Commonwealth jurisdiction over the Northern Territory. The expansive open land of Frog Hollow holds great value to the Darwin community due to its historical associations with the worker camps and later the presence of Darwin Primary School. Furthermore, it is cherished as natural parkland within the central area of the city, adding to its appeal and importance.
