Notes: William was the adopted son of Lau Dan (aka Wo Yuen) a Chinese merchant on lot 401 Cavenagh Street and his wife Lin How Loo. William Wei Kwong Low was born in Loong Do, Zhongshan, China on 4 April 1918 and arrived in Darwin on the Montoro on 14 May 1923. He married Gum Hee Lee in Darwin on 7 April 1940. William Wei Kwong Low died in Sydney, N.S.W. on 29 August 1992 and he is buried at Rookwood Chinese Cemetery. William Wei Kwong served in the Australian army [Service No D278]. His mother Lin How and wife Gum Hee sailed per Zealandia to Bowen, Queensland before moving to New South Wales. Information provided by Leonie Low (nee Nissen) (Daughter-in-law) 26-03-2014.

Description:
Little Red Engine, Darwin Infant School. Children on train engine. Train was later moved to Museum site at old Town Hall, then to Fannie Bay Gaol Museum. Viewed from McMinn Street. Circa 1955.

Frog Hollow, located in Darwin, has an interesting historical background. In 1952, the area known as Frog Hollow became the site for the construction of Darwin Primary School. The school buildings were situated on what is now known as Lot 5672, while the school playground encompassed the western part of Lot 5672 and Lot 5665. Prior to the establishment of the school, Frog Hollow served as a natural drainage line, transforming into a wet season creek during certain times of the year.
Lot 5665 of Frog Hollow holds particular significance as it was officially designated as a Heritage Place under the Heritage Conservation Act in March 1996. The Heritage Register describes Frog Hollow as an open parkland that was initially used as worker camps during the early years of Commonwealth jurisdiction over the Northern Territory. The expansive open land of Frog Hollow holds great value to the Darwin community due to its historical associations with the worker camps and later the presence of Darwin Primary School. Furthermore, it is cherished as natural parkland within the central area of the city, adding to its appeal and importance.

The Buffalo Shed entered it in the Festival as a paper mache float, it then was then spray concreted and placed at the front of their souvenir shop on the Stuart Highway in Winnellie, the shop was owned by the Thornton's and did their own leather work and buffalo horns.

I was speaking with Norm Balke in early Feb-2024 and he said he took this photo of Aboriginal burial Totem poles in the early 1970s. This was opposite Totem Road and Dickward Drive Coconut Grove.

He said there was a mixture of what appeared to be a conventional burial site area with Christian-type crosses, plus the Totem poles site as seen in his photograph.

For the past two months, I've passed by this location almost daily, witnessing what appears to be gravel trucks and machinery tirelessly spreading a substantial foundation across an expansive area.

They were a bit light-on for attractions in Darwin 60 years ago. The local newsagent makes it onto a flip-out postcard! At least they captured that stunning colour combo on that FC of yellow and black .

Here is a really old photo from 1870. It was taken from Government House looking towards Mitchell Street. In the centre of the photo is Inspector Paul FoelSche's house and to the right is the first police station.

Additional photos show a better view of the police station in 1870, taken from the Esplanade. The Inspector's house is just visible behind on the right hand side, and a closeup view of Inspector Paul FoelSche house.

Indeed it is, that station was not built until November 1870, from their arrival in January the police had operated out of what had been Dr Peels house down in Goyder's camp. That building remained in use as Police Barracks until 1874. For much of the time between January and November the Police were absent from Palmerston escorting the Overland Telegraph builders.

Was gifted box of old Kodachrome colour slides this morning! Among the 100 or so is this view of Vickers Valiant WP209 very obviously at Darwin and possibly 1958 or 1959. Nothing further known. This aircraft spent a lot of time ‘unserviceable’ in earlier years.

Several visited OZ in the late 1950's most or all in Photo Reconnaissance roles.

Some slight camera shake observed as sometimes seen in the very slow 10 ASA film that saw many photographers use tripods to minimise the problem.

A24-95, of No. 42 Squadron RAAF, into a RAAF launch, no. 011-12, on arrival at Darwin after they had been picked up from a Japanese hospital. The survivors were from the United States Army Air Force flying in a Douglas C47 transport aircraft which crashed into the sea. The survivors, washed ashore on Jamdena Island in the Tanimbar Group, were Captain Otto Leipske of Waukesha, Wisconsin, pilot; Lieutenant Howie Crothers of Little Rock, Arkansas, 2nd pilot; Captain John Rodof of Tulsex, Oklahoma, a passenger; Sergeant Frank Termin of Borger, Texas, radio operator; and Corporal Eugene Janicker of Cameron, Texas, an engineer."

I know Eric served as a Captain in the Army during WWII. I believe I have correctly identified the family members in the photo. However, the date and location are still a mystery. My best guess is that it was taken on Princess Bridge in Melbourne, as I'm quite familiar with the structure.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Marcia's passing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family. Although we only came to know her and formed a friendship over the past few years, Marcia generously shared her wealth of knowledge, captivating stories, and cherished photographs of the Izod family and Darwin's pioneering history. Her absence will be keenly felt, and we will greatly miss her presence.

This photo is part of the Edna Tambling collection at the NT Library. Considering the description in white handwritten printing, it was possibly a more widely circulated generic photo of the times. There is a bit of fresh water that comes down from the Gardens, but it was mostly tidal. As a kid I remember a small lugger that lived in the creek with a plank onto the north bank. Only about 1 metre of water at high tide, but the boat sat on the bottom on a low neap. My mate Dave Langley (RIP Dave, who past away recently) used to visit his father (Jack I think) who lived on it for a while. The B&W photo attached is from the 1940's.

Cheryl And-Don McKenzie, This same photo also appears in Jessie Litchfield's "Far-North Memories", published in 1930, on the photo page opposite p150. This would suggest a more credible date of late 1920s for the image. There is no credit given for the image, and no white printed description, which may suggest that Jessie Litchfield herself was the photographer.

Don:
Daly Street Bridge is located on Stuart Highway in Darwin, Northern Territory. Daly Street, which is approximately 1.5 kilometers long, is known for its bridge, commonly referred to as the bridge that starts Darwin CBD. The street extends from The Esplanade in Darwin City to the Stuart Highway. Although there are not many businesses situated on Daly Street nowadays, there are several active and disused car yards, as well as Harriet Place, which includes a small backpackers. Interestingly, the foundation of the railway line bridge, also known as Bill's Reminiscing, is still visible, although the tracks were removed, making it appear like a hump in the road.

Dating this and many other Aboriginal images from the period is challenging, as most of Paul Foelsche's photographs aren’t dated in the archives. I was so captivated by the striking features of this young Aboriginal man that I couldn’t resist creating two zoomed-in images of his face.
